Artist Statement
This series is meant to show how type can be expressive as a composition. I was restricted to only using type & glyphs to create this composition. The song this is based off is grungy yet digital, with a strong beat. I chose the color pallet to reflect the chaotic, honest, digital nature of the song. Challenged to do one piece that represents the rhythm, one for melody and one more conceptual piece, these were the product.
Process
I reflected the passion of this song with the font Mistral, a hand-written style typeface, for the most stressed words in the chorus. For the rest of the lyrics I used URW DIN (Condensed), to show the digital sound of the song and the clear nature of the performer's voice. I also used a variety of glyphs to add texture and noise. I incorporated the Spotify-brand's music-QR codes so that theoretically it could be scannable and link the reader to listen to the song on Spotify, by recreating it with glyphs from the Futura font. I chose the song "I Am Not A Woman, I'm a God" by Halsey because I relate to the idea that even my mere existence is political. My goal was for the imagery and the color pallet to mimic the electric-grungy vibes of the song.
